After less than twelve hours on the ground, London already feels like home again. The streets, the trees, the double-ring on the other line when you make a call. Narrow staircases and sidewalks, the circus-esque patterned and colored velour lining the tube’s seats. Walking through M&S carrying a wire basket — knowing you can only buy what you can actually carry home. How quickly it’s all coming back.

Liz and I had a safe — and what felt relatively quick — flight over, more comfortable and able to sleep thanks to a last-minute seat upgrade (from middle-middle to window-aisle!) at the gate. Our flat for the week is just north of Hyde Park — fabulously convenient and a bit larger (go figure!) than I expected (hey, we even have a mini wash machine).

After landing and settling in a bit with groceries and checking emails, I ventured out while Liz stayed in, taking it easy.

Andy McKee — an insanely talented acoustic guitarist (and best known for this YouTube sensation) — and a few accompanying artists were playing at the Union Chapel.

The venue was gorgeous — the perfect atmosphere for the night’s acoustics. They even served hot tea and little pots of ice cream … it was heavenly!

Here are some highlights:

And now, off to bed …

No. Shorts do not crack the code. They break them. The dress code, that is.

The New York Times Style section – a place I usually consider a trustworthy Style Bible of sorts – recently revealed a shocking menswear solution to uncomfortable heat, a climate that San Francisco is experiencing now – the Indian Summer, our brief relief from the fog. This latest trend? Wearing shorts, and short suits, to work.

My first inclination? If women are not allowed, not encouraged, or get scorned for wearing shorts or anything too-above-the-knee to work, why should men be granted this luxury?

My second inclination? I do not need to see my co-workers’, let alone my boss’ or my CEO’s, thighs.

My third inclination? Loafers + No Socks = No Thank You. I smell feet…clammy ones.

I understand that this trend is meant particularly for hotter, and especially more humid, climates. That was the article’s whole point: the short-suit, or chino shorts + shirt + tie + blazer, can replace the traditional suit and trousers during the summer, because yeah – I bet men do get hot in that same ol’ long-sleeves-and-long-pants get-up every day. But frankly, there are very few company cultures that would allow this.

Bankers? No. Real estate agents? No, unless we’re talking beach realty…maybe. Anything involving client meetings? I hope not!

Short suits, however, are not the only options for hard-workers in warm climates. Oddly enough, and I’m not sure how they got away with it, the NYT makes short-sleeved shirts sound foreign and risque:

“The willingness of men to expand the amount of skin they are inclined to display can be gauged by the short-sleeved shirts Senator Barack Obama has lately favored; the muscle T-shirts Anderson Cooper wears on CNN assignment; and the Armani billboard in which David Beckham, the soccer star, appears nearly nude.”

Since when is the polo shirt a new, surprising concept in menswear? And even more so, when did a polo shirt ever hint at too much skin?

Please people. If you’re wealthy enough to be tailoring your new Obedient Sons or LOVA short suit, then do us all a favor: stop worrying about the shorts; start pairing polos with trousers – or even jeans! Avoid polyester (totally not breathable) and wear linen when you can (I know it wrinkles, but are we more worried about wrinkles or massive sweat stains during that meeting?), and turn up the AC in your freakin’ office.

But please, unless you are Beckham, do not show me your ankles, knees, or thighs.

I never started noticing I did this until a close friend of mine asked if I did (asking me, I’m guessing, to rationalize her own doings). At least I know I’m not alone in liking to give my feet fresh air during the day. I mean, to avoid copious swelling & redness, noticeable odor, and blisters, I slip off my shoes while I’m seated at my desk. Granted, I have a decently private office, shared with only one colleague, and it’s carpeted. Plus, I work in fashion — it’s not like we wear comfortable shoes to the office. Think: 3-4″ heels (yes, I know this makes me upwards of 6′4″), pointed toes, not particularly padded anywhere on the insole. I figure not a big deal, right? Slip them back on before you get up. And no one really notices, because who’s looking under your desk anyway? Ha! Turns out, I’m wrong.

A consequence to being so tall is having extremely long legs (yes, shopping for pants is a pain, but that’s a different posting). Long legs which, when extended underneath my desk, force my feet to protrude out the other side. My feet and thus…my toes. So yesterday as I’m typing away, describing some exorbitantly expensive shoe, a friend of mine quietly and softly comes in and TICKLES MY FEET.

Gross, I know. But so hilarious. We were laughing nearly to tears.

Let’s just say it’s time I invest in more comfortable, wearable, fashion-industry-appropriate flats. And also learn how to conceal my bare toes.
